Practical Psychology

I want to teach you some fundamental principles of how humans operate that I call Practical Psychology.  Over the span of 25 years I have conducted therapy with thousands of individuals.  People often believe that there are these deep dark secrets of how therapy works.  There are none!  Does therapy work?  Yes it can.  There are various theories and techniques that are studied and applied by psychologists and therapists that have some positive impact on patients.  But it is not in some magical transformation that takes place in the office.  As principles are taught in the office and insight is acquired this is the beginning of the process but it is in the practical application of basic principles on a daily basis outside the office that really makes the difference.  Now I recognize that there are varying degrees of emotional illness with some individuals suffering with significant chronic issues that will require fairly intensive treatment over an extended period of time.  But even these individuals will experience great benefits in applying these basic daily practices.   It is the same with our physical health where some individuals suffer from chronic and even terminal illnesses and require very specialized treatment.  Nonetheless, there are fundamental physical principles that will benefit everyone.  For example, no matter what your physical condition is, you will be better served by eating fresh fruits and vegetables and keeping your body well hydrated.  Your body will function better if it gets an appropriate amount of sleep and regular exercise.  No matter the physical disease or diagnosis you may have your body will do much better if you do not use drugs and alcohol, sit around and watch TV all day and eat Doritos, and drink soda.

What I am teaching you is not rocket science.  You do not need a Ph.D. in Quantum Physics to understand these principles.  In fact, you do not need a college degree or even a high school diploma!  (Although I do think education is a good idea for everyone, regardless).  The things I am teaching you do not require any extraordinary physical abilities.   You do not need to be able to run a marathon in 3 hours or dunk a basketball.  You just need to consistently apply basic principles in your daily life.

Bronco Mendenhall who is the head football coach for the University of Virginia and has coached NCAA football for 28 years talked about this principle of focusing on the basics.  He said that throughout his coaching career he has worked with many exceptional athletes who became All-Pro in the National Football League.  This is the best of the best in football.   In his observations he noticed that these players did not have any extraordinary talent beyond that of the other players.  What he noticed, however, was that they did the basic things more, longer, and better than the other players.

Are you with me?  Are you committed?  It's your well-being that's at stake.  LET’S DO IT!
